Downed power lines can be restored and structures repaired or rebuilt, but for some, Hurricane Sandy left painful memories. Compared to the physical toll suffered by businesses and homes in New London, Connecticut, the damage to the Custom House Maritime was minimal, but the emotional toll far greater. The last port of the ill-fated tall ship HSM Bounty was New London, before she set out for Florida only to sink off the coast of North Carolina in the midst of Sandy’s fury.

The lasting impacts of Hurricane Sandy are difficult for anyone to assess.  Federal, state and local municipalities are still calculating the cost of the damage, while the businesses that inhabit them are struggling to rebuild.  But in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there is hope.  Joseph LaRocca, owner of LaRocca’s Pizzeria in Staten Island, remains an example of why small businesses are essential to building strong communities, and there is no dollar amount that can be placed on the sentimental value they hold.
